The position of Laboratory Assistant is within our Toxicology Business Unit located at Abingdon, UK. The main purpose of the role is to receive, unpack and accession samples for analysis, providing the screening laboratory with sample aliquots in a timely manner.
Role: Laboratory Assistant
Location: 21 Blacklands Way, Abingdon OX14 1DY
Shift Patten: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm
Pay rate: £23,500 per annum
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To ensure that all samples are handled according to current Standard Operating Procedures and to a strict Chain of Custody, providing all relevant sample information to the rest of the company.
- Conform with appropriate safety standards under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Work in accordance with the current documented Standard Operating Procedures. Abbott Toxicology is an ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 certified laboratory.
Major functional objectives
- Preparation of hair and oral fluid samples for analysis, within agreed timeframes
- Ensure all equipment used is within current specifications including calibration and maintenance requirements
- Accurate data entry, including relevant scanning and archiving
- Logging 'discrepancy' samples and liaising with Customer Services to resolves any issues efficiently and promptly
- Sample storage and logging
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Adherence to quality systems, including review and amendment of relevant SOPS as necessary
- Carry out tasks as directed by the Analytical Support Team Leader and to feedback any problems, working to assist in their resolution
- Continue to participate in training programmes across Laboratory Operations to develop themselves and to increase their breadth of understanding of the function of Operations as a whole
In addition to the above, the role of the laboratory assistant may also extend to include
responsibilities such as:
- Laboratory maintenance, including preparation of solutions and stock count
- Laboratory cleanliness and maintenance of a safe and pleasant work environment
- Basic systems maintenance
- Assist in the preparation of Risk Assessments
- Actively contribute to achievement of TAT (>98% of all samples to be delivered within target TAT)
- Development of knowledge of customer account set-up and ability to troubleshoot related sample problems
- Identification of process improvement possibilities
