H W Martin Waste Ltd manages many household waste recycling centres with contracts from Milton Keynes to Durham and operates materials recycling facilities (MRF’s) in Alfreton, Leeds, Sutton in Ashfield and Durham.

An opportunity has arisen for a Health & Safety advisor to support the waste business through undertaking audits and promoting our safety culture, offering advice and guidance where appropriate in order to contribute to achieving Health and Safety related company objectives.

Key duties

Provide professional health and safety advice to the business and ensure that safe working practices and Health and Safety legislation are adhered to.

The postholder will liaise closely with the Group Director HSEQ, Risk and Compliance and other Health and Safety Professionals to ensure full compliance with all company and legislative requirements.

Develop and maintain H&S policies,procedures and risk assessments that ensure compliance with group policies and procedures, operational activities, external guidance, and legislation.

Represent the company at internal and external meetings as required.

Develop and progress by working collaboratively with all stakeholders to achieve Company Health and Safety related objectives and individual targets

Assist the Management Team to continuously improve Health and Safety practices with an emphasis on actively guiding and coaching management and site staff to strive for Health and Safety performance improvements.

Lead on the periodic H&S meetings across the business.

Create and maintain effective working relationships with your line manager, colleagues, sub-contractors, and site users

Maintain an up to date understanding of the needs of the organisation and its clients, supply chain and other interested parties, its internal and external issues, and the risks and opportunities arising from those issues.

Ensure that business systems are fit for purpose. Undertake auditing to ensure continual compliance with relevant standards, including ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and with other accreditation bodies, e.g., SSIP.

Analyse audit findings, propose and implement initiatives for improvement.

Analyse H & S data, including near miss, accident and incident stats to propose and implement initiatives for improvement.

Propose strategies for controlling and reducing risk in all areas of the business.

Provide advice, support and assistance to the Directors, Senior Management and operational teams.

Take the lead in the event of major unplanned incidents such as accidents.

Keep up to date with legislation, industry standards, best practices and communicate requirements throughout the business.

Education

  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate
  • Membership of IOSH or working towards
  • Membership of IEMA or working towards
  • Proficient in IT systems and document management.

Experience

  • Experience in a similar hands-on role preferably within the Waste recycling sector.
  • Experience in risk management – identifying emerging risks and managing ongoing risks
  • Experience of business process review and audit, including implementation of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 preferred
  • Experience in Accident and Incident Investigation
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills as well as attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
  • Multi – site experience

Skills

  • Ability to communicate both written and orally, good attention to detail and to present information clearly and concisely
  • Portrays enthusiasm, passion, and ambition to learn and develop.
  • Positive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • The ability to liaise with all levels of management on a professional level, using good communication/interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisational skills to be responsible for managing own workload.
