Senior Estimator

Position Type: Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week

The Opportunity
My client is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join their Infrastructure - Water North Business Unit, based in Derbyshire. In this role, you will be responsible for the preparation and submission of tenders under various forms of procurement, ensuring the business secures a profitable workload. You will work closely with the bid team, leveraging your construction and commercial expertise to ensure competitive bids, manage risks, and add value throughout the tender process. The role involves preparing budgets, cost plans, and analytical estimates, while also ensuring effective Risk and Value Management during the tender phase.

Key Responsibilities
• Appraise tender documents and identify site-specific risks through site visits.
• Prepare material and subcontractor inquiries, selecting appropriate subcontractors.
• Attend strategy and opportunity meetings with the project team.
• Contribute to the design development process and attend design team meetings as needed.
• Prepare tender Bills of Quantities and analytical cost estimates, including preliminaries.
• Manage the preparation of budgets and cost plans, aligning with tender goals.
• Adjudicate and compare subcontractor quotations.
• Address technical queries, ensuring sufficient design development for accurate costings.
• Manage risks throughout the tender period, maintaining the tender Risk Register.
• Apply value engineering principles during the design phase of design and build projects.
• Present tenders to senior management, highlighting major commercial issues or elevated risks.
• Complete and submit tender documentation to deadlines.
• Ensure smooth project handover to the operational team.
• Support Business Continuity Planning and ensure team members are aware of their roles and responsibilities within this plan.

Requirements
• A degree in Construction or a related field (essential).
• At least 10 years of experience in a similar role.
• Competency in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Extensive analytical estimating experience, working on projects valued up to £25 million.
• Familiarity with various forms of contract, including traditional, partnering, design & build, and frameworks.
• Proficient in using estimating software (essential).
• Strong technical construction knowledge and understanding of industry standards.
• Awareness of BIM and experience in cost planning.
• Ability to build estimates from first principles, understanding outputs, methodology, and how to develop sequence and programme.
• Ability to compare outputs and sequence with tender planner for comparison and adjudication.
• Strong numerical skills, risk awareness, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work as part of a team or independently, with commitment to tight deadlines.
• Professional, flexible attitude, and effective communication skills.
• Presentation skills with an innovative and creative approach to problem-solving.
• Leadership ability and a commitment to developing others.
