The RCM is seeking to appoint an independent advisor to support with financial, audit and risk management awareness as a member of its Audit and Risk Committee. Your role will support the members of the Committee, who are Registered Midwives and Maternity Support Workers, by utilising your knowledge and expertise in the above areas.
The RCM’s Audit and Risk Committee’s terms of reference are attached for more information on its purpose and duties.
The Committee meets four times per year, either at the RCM’s Headquarters in London Bridge, or virtually via Microsoft Teams. Some preparation time will be required ahead of each meeting. Further meetings are sometimes necessary during periods of increased activity. Communication via email or Teams between meetings with other members of the Committee, RCM staff and auditors is also to be expected.
The Committee comprises three members of the RCM Board (all of whom are midwives or maternity support workers) plus (the person now being sought) one independent (external) person to ensure the committee is advised with appropriate knowledge and expertise.
The appointment is for an initial period of two years, but can be extended subject to a maximum of five years in total.
The position is voluntary and therefore not remunerated. However, the RCM will reimburse you for reasonable and properly documented expenses you incur in performing the duties of your appointment. Reimbursement will be on the same terms as those set out for members of the RCM Board.
The RCM’s independent advisor (financial, audit and risk management) will demonstrate the ability and capacity to:
- Dedicate sufficient time to support and advise effectively
- Give direct and honest professional opinions and add value to decision-making
- Deliver effective challenge and hold candid discussions with management and auditors
- Provide inquisitiveness and independent judgement
- Offer different perspectives and constructive suggestions
- Use your financial literacy and understanding of financial statements, to share your views, support the committee members and optimise audit processes
The person to be appointed should also be able to demonstrate:
- financial expertise; and
- expertise in audit or risk management.
