Our Client is a company mainly engaged in the manufacture of electrical wires. The Company operates its business through three divisions: electrical wire division, electricity system division and other business division. Its electrical wire division mainly provides bare copper wires, bare aluminum wires, power wires, insulated wires and telecommunication cables. Its electricity system division provides heavy electric equipment, such as gas insulated switch gears (GISs), transformers, switches and distribution boards, and industrial equipment, including pumps and motors. Its other business division provides lighting products and exhaust emissions reduction equipment. The Company distributes its products within UK and overseas markets.

This role is crucial in ensuring the successful and efficient delivery of underground power cable projects, contributing to the UKs growing energy infrastructure and supporting the transition to a more sustainable power grid

Role: 1 year contract minimum, full time

Candidate expected 1 to 2 days per month in the office, site visits and hybrid work

As a Project Manager in the underground power cable business, you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and successful completion of underground power cable installation projects across the UK. This role involves managing multiple large-scale projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations, and delivering results on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Planning & Coordination:

  • Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, resource allocation, and budgets for underground power cable installations.
  • Collaborate with design teams, engineers, and clients to ensure alignment with project specifications.
  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies to prevent delays or overspending.

Execution & Delivery:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of power cable installation projects, including civil works, trenching, cable laying, jointing, and testing.
  • Ensure that projects meet technical requirements, industry regulations (including UK Distribution Network Operator standards), and environmental considerations.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and efficient project execution.

Budget & Financial Management:

  • Monitor project budgets, track expenses, and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Manage project cash flows, cost control, and profitability to ensure financial objectives are met.
  • Prepare financial and progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Health, Safety, & Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure all project activities comply with the latest UK safety standards, CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations, environmental policies, NEC contract.
  • Implement safety management systems on-site and carry out regular audits and inspections.
  • Promote a culture of health and safety across all levels of the project team.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, regulatory bodies, and utility companies to obtain necessary approvals and permits.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, providing regular updates and addressing concerns or changes in project scope.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and maintain strong working relationships with all involved parties.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead and motivate project teams, providing clear direction, objectives, and performance management.
  • Manage subcontractor performance and ensure their adherence to project schedules and quality standards.
  • Conduct project reviews and lessons learned sessions to drive continuous improvement.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • PMP, PRINCE2, or similar project management certification (advantageous).

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience managing infrastructure or power-related projects, with specific expertise in underground power cables.
  • Strong knowledge of UK power distribution systems, DNO (Distribution Network Operator) processes, and underground cable installation techniques.
  • Proven track record in managing complex, large-scale projects within the utility or energy sector.

Key Skills:

  • Strong understanding of power cable technologies, trenchless techniques (e.g., horizontal directional drilling), and installation best practices.
  • Excellent project planning, budgeting, and risk management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and resolve complex issues.
  • Proficiency with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera).
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with an emphasis on team coordination and client satisfaction.

Other Requirements:

  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel and work on-site at various locations across the UK.
  • Understanding of environmental and archaeological concerns related to underground installations.
