We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Retail Manager to support the Retail Manager in the running of Alnwick Castle retail outlets.

This is a permanent position based at Alnwick Castle, with flexible working: 3 days (22.5 hours) over 7 days (April to October) and 3 days of 5 (November to March). There will be weekend and Bank Holiday working required and occasional evenings with potential to increase hours as the role develops.

Salary £24,000 - £25,000pro rata dependendent on age and experience

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

To assist the Retail Manger in providing a first- class retail offer for our visitors by ensuring the retail units are merchandised appropriately to promote an attractive offer to a wide variety of customers.

To deliver exceptional customer service and follow all relevant company procedures including till and stock operations.

To assist in the day-to-day supervision of retail outlets, including, sales, staff and stock resources management.

To assist in maintaining supplier relationships.

To research new stock lines as dictated by visitor demographics.

To take onthe Duty Manger role on occasion

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in the management of stock budgets to attain the best profitability and margins, meeting key performance indicators

Assist in the management of staffing budgets and attain the best possible staffing levels at varying times through-out the day/season.

Operate the EPOS system in accordance with the The Alnwick Castles financial procedures

Assist in the recruitment of suitable staff, supervising and appraising staff on a regular basis, reporting any appropriate issues to HR.

Assist in organising and leading staff training and development as required to improve customer relations and sales performance.

Manage and motivate a team to increase sales and ensure efficiency on a daily basis.

Manage stock levels and make key decisions about stock control.

Source new products in line with current trends and visitor demographics.

Analyse and interpret sales data and trends to facilitate future planning and retail growth.

Ensure standards for quality, customer service and health and safety are in accordance with regulated law and Northumberland Estates policy are met.

Resolving health and safety issues.

Respond to customer complaints and comments.

Attend and report to ACV management team meetings.

Update colleagues on business performance, new initiatives and other pertinent issues.

Tour the sales floors regularly, talking to staff, colleagues and customers and identifying and resolving any urgent issues, including Health and Safety and Potential Fire risks.

Initiate changes to improve the business, e.g. revising opening times to suit and benefit and maximise the sales of the business.

Initiate a cleaning procedure to maintain a high level of hygiene and staff cleanliness for all staff and shop fixtures furniture and flooring.

Ensure cash handling is in accordance with Northumberland Estates Policy and is securely locked away and checked on a regular basis for any anomalies that may occur.

Deputise for the Retail Manager as required.

Undertake Duty Manager training and be part of the Duty Manager team.

Carry out any additional or alternative duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope of the post as required by and Northumberland Estates.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Training, Experience & Qualifications

  • A good standard of education, including qualifications in English Language, Mathematics and IT is required.
  • Strong understanding of retail operations, merchandising, and customer service.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Retail management experience
  • Educated to degree level or appropriate level of managerial experience

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent ICT skills
  • Experienced EPOS systems (currently Access Gamma)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • General awareness of Health & Safety and security
  • Good planning and organisation skills
  • Knowledge of Alnwick Castle
  • General knowledge of other local amenities and attractions around Northumberland
