Principal Mechanical Engineer - Staff or Possibly Outside IR35 Contract – Nuclear – Salary + Benefit or Hourly Rate – Hybrid Working – 4 Day Working Week - Lancashire

Our leading client operates within the nuclear sector, and they are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer on a staff or contract (outside IR35) basis. You will actively lead and supervise engineering design teams in related discipline, providing technical direction and oversight in the execution of engineering activities, ensuring a compliant and safe design and achievement of quality standards.

You will be working within a design office, there is also a manufacturing facility on site. You will also have the opportunity to work on prestigious projects for a leading nuclear based company.  Material or mechanical handling project experience would be preferred. 

Support the Engineering Manager in the measurement and reporting of engineering activities against cost, schedule, quality and safety. Support the operations of the engineering portfolio and identify continuous improvement opportunities through the robust challenge of processes and procedures to achieve Excellence in Engineering.

Duties:

  • Provide technical support to the Engineering Manager in the production of bid proposals and tender responses.
  • Actively lead and supervise engineering design teams in related discipline, providing technical direction and oversight in the execution of engineering activities.
  • Plan and coordinate engineering activities, monitoring performance against project baseline (scope, cost and schedule), and supporting the Engineering Manager in the identification, assessment and control of contract change.
  • Support the Engineering Manager in the preparation, monitoring and control of project schedules, identifying engineering activities, budgets and resources to implement engineering delivery strategies.
  • Provide technical oversight and support in the execution of engineering activities.
  • Produce design basis documentation to support the specification and development of engineering design solutions.
  • Ensure disciplined application of configuration control arrangements for the identification and control of 3D Models, drawings and documentation.
  • Identify, record and communicate engineering requirements to provide a clear baseline for design development and management of change control.
  • Where UKCA / CE marking is required, identify, record and communicate applicable legislation, regulations and standards (designated or harmonised) to provide a clear baseline for the identification and verification of essential health and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate and facilitate collaborative working with other engineering disciplines to ensure fully integrated multidiscipline engineering design.
  • Produce Design Quality Plans to identify applicable processes and procedures to be implemented in the execution of engineering activities, ensuring work is completed in accordance with the processes and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager to support the identification and development of employee competence through personnel development plans, training and continuous professional development.
  • Support the Engineering Manager in the monitoring and assessment of assigned resources against their defined roles and responsibilities, engineering competencies and personnel development plans, recognising achievements and escalating behavioural and performance concerns.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Ideally a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or an engineering discipline relevant to the role.
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of the Machinery Directive, LOLER, PUWER, CDM and other applicable legislation, regulations and standards, and their associated application in the engineering design process.
  • Industry experience in either nuclear, materials handling or similar environment would be preferred.
  • Ensure disciplined application of configuration control arrangements for the identification and control of 3D Models, drawings and documentation.
