Pallet Afternoon Operations Manager based in Kent
REPORTING TO: Hub manager
Purpose of the role :
The Pallet afternoon operations manager will be responsible for the dispatching of Pallet delivery drivers and the general running of the afternoon operations ensuring deliveries are out on time, tracking to time and second runs are completing on time. Collections are made throughout the day to feed the pallet operation in the evenings, these need close management to arrive back at hub to be reloaded and out.
Daily management of all Driver Duties relating to dispatching, routing, maintaining roadworthy vehicles, tracking vehicles, ensuring process and procedure is always followed and quick effective resolution to client queries.
The position has responsibility for 10-12 Drivers of all classes as well as up to 2 office staff and a yard co-ordinator/FLT driver.
Hours of Work
Tuesday to Friday 12.00 midday - 22.00
Saturday 0900 - 15.00 expected finish time
Flexibility up to 50 hours per week will be expected
50,000 plus bonus
Main areas of accountability
- Management and planning of daily deliveries and collections. Including manual and electronic routing
- Ensure timely responses to the Pallet Message Board
- Effective communication throughout the team and between depots including monthly driver meetings and toolbox talks.
- Identifying and capturing additional revenue through PAR's and FORS deliveries and managing revenue protection.
- Monitoring of all Outbound Freight with regards to delivery times and ensuring milestones are hit throughout the day
- Management of all drivers ensuring effective pre-brief, on the road assistance and debrief with any issues being resolved quickly and effectively.
- Assist in reporting for and management of the fleet including maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure all Ad-Hoc jobs are allocated and booked with relevant driver.
- Production of daily handover report and other management reporting as required.
- Ensure all required equipment is fit for purpose, distributed correctly and repairs and scheduled as needed.
- Promote a safe working environment and ensure all staff are aware of their own health and safety responsibilities.
- Ensure all vehicles are booked out & all vehicle pre-checks have been completed.
- Ensure that all staff are trained in all required aspects of their role.
- To cascade and manage any HR related matters.
- Manage the picking of orders and their despatch.
- Manage the receiving and checking of stock orders into the site and ensuring that everything is appropriately stored.
- Next day routing for the drivers for pallet deliveries for handover to the Morning Pallet operations manager.
- Managing tightly to budget and working through complex routings to ensure effective routing and best cost per delivery is achieved
- Experienced in cost control and managing to budget, being able to collate information for P&L reporting each week.
- Timed dispatch of evening trunks and reporting associated with dispatch and hub communications
- Loading pallet trunks for central and southern distribution to a fixed time schedule
- Labelling pallets as required with updated pallet over labels
- Checking and scanning pallet labels onto the trunks with the FLT drivers
- Handover documentation for Morning operations manager and end of day reporting.
Skills & Experience:
- PREVIOUS PALLET, PARCEL OR HAULAGE DISTRIBUTION EXPERIENCE IS ESSENTIAL
- Excellent understanding of the English language, both written and verbal
- Professional and approachable
- A good team player
- Be an excellent communicator with the ability to manage and exceed expectations
- Keen attention to detail and a desire to get things right the first time
- You will be confident in using IT systems and computers and be competent using excel, as well as other Microsoft office packages, routing software and dispatch software, pallet systems and use of pallet systems is a distinct advantage.
- You will be able to work independently and as part of a team, with a positive attitude towards change
- Be a quick and eager learner whilst being able to ask for help and assistance when needed
- Able to use your own initiative and make logical decisions
- Good time management and the ability to prioritise tasks
- Pallet distribution knowledge / strong street knowledge of central London would be distinct advantage

- Manager CPC - Desirable but not Essential (Willing to work towards if not)
