The School:
We are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant for an independent specialist school in Barking, catering to students aged 11-19. All students have a primary diagnosis of Autism, along with additional complex needs. Many pupils also have significant Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and may display challenging behaviour. The school offers a supportive and nurturing environment where every student is encouraged to achieve their full potential.

The Role:
This full-time, temporary Teaching Assistant position offers the opportunity to work closely with a dynamic team to provide exceptional care and educational support. You will assist students during lessons, lead small group interventions, and provide one-to-one support when required. Strong behaviour management skills and an understanding of supporting mental health needs will be essential in this role.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Support students during lessons under the guidance of the class teacher
  • Lead small group interventions to enhance students’ academic and personal development
  • Provide one-to-one support to students as directed
  • Help maintain a calm, positive, and structured classroom environment
  • Implement behaviour management strategies to support SEMH needs

Essential Criteria/Skills:

  • Strong spoken and written English skills
  • Excellent behaviour management skills
  • High levels of resilience and patience
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure

Desirable Criteria:

  • Previous experience supporting SEMH needs
  • Experience working with secondary age students
