About the RoleBarnoldswick Alternative School is looking for an Outdoor Instructor (HLTA / Mentor / Teacher) to work one-to-one with KS3 and KS4 students, delivering Functional Skills in an alternative provision setting on a boat. This unique role will see you teaching in an outdoor environment, including sessions aboard our narrowboat, helping to engage and inspire young people through practical, hands-on learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities:- Deliver Functional Skills lessons to KS3 and KS4 students in an engaging and accessible way.
- Provide one-to-one support, helping students build confidence and achieve their personal goals.
- Utilize outdoor learning environments, including a narrowboat, to make education a practical and enriching experience.
- Implement a trauma-informed approach, recognizing and responding to student's individual needs.
- Work closely with the pastoral and SEND team to support students with additional needs.
- Encourage resilience, teamwork, and independence through outdoor activities.
- Experience working with young people, particularly those who may have additional needs or barriers to education.
- A qualification in teaching, mentoring, outdoor education, or HLTA status (or relevant experience).
- A passion for alternative education and a flexible, creative approach to teaching.
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches to behaviour.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills (Maths & English) or vocational subjects is desirable.
- The ability to build positive relationships with students, offering patience, encouragement, and guidance.
