Barnsley Council are seeking 2 Travel Enablers to join the team based in Barnsley. You will join us on a part time, permanent basis, and in return, you will receive a salary of £24,027 - £24,404 per annum pro rata.

We are seeking two travel enablers to join our small Independent Travel Training (ITT) team. The Travel Trainers provide support to adults, young people and children who are referred to the service to learn how to travel independently using public transport. Many of the trainees have additional needs, and travel training provides them with the opportunity to achieve a level of independence that often leads to increased opportunities in work, education, and social activities.

The travel training can take place at any time during the day and sometimes evening, depending on the journey location and purpose.  You would need to be able to work flexibly as there will be days where your time would be split between the outgoing and return journeys, for example supporting the trainee in their journey from home to college in the morning then the college to home journey later in the day. This is a 20-hour post, with a requirement to work Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day, with some flexibility to meet the needs of the service’.

Shape a better future with us

We take pride in leading, supporting, and developing our people. We invite you to join us in our success and help drive change even further. Together, with our communities, we can take pride in improving lives and making Barnsley a better place for everyone. Let's embark on this journey to a brighter future.

Your role in our journey

As a Travel Trainer, you will work with individual trainees, following a training plan and risk assessment developed with your Line Manager, to teach the required skills.  You will work independently for some stages of the training process and collaboratively with the support of your colleagues as the trainee progresses.

You will be required to complete accurate reports documenting the progress of the trainee against their identified training needs.

Training and support will be provided, and you will have regular catch-up conversations with your Line Manager to discuss the trainees’ progress and to provide any additional support, advice and guidance that you might need.

What you’ll need

You will need a minimum Level 1 English and Maths qualification, a relevant Level 2 qualification in Care, (or be willing to complete this within 6 months of commencing employment) and experience of working in a support or mentoring role.

You will need to have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to use IT.

Additionally, some knowledge of the local transport routes and the local area would be beneficial, as well as previous experience of supporting people with additional needs.

A lot to look forward to

Here at Barnsley, we live and work by four important values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service and taking pride in what we do. As part of our team, you can be sure we’ll do all we can to support you in being truly excellent. You see, we prioritise learning and enabling you to achieve your potential. So we’ve created a development process that lets you grow in the way that suits you - whether that’s training to be a leader or learning flexibly online. That’s one of the reasons why you’ll find your career here inspiring and rewarding.
