Job Title: Mechanical Setter/Fitter

Industry: Steel

Location: Barnsley

Salary: (3-shift rotation) - £27,696.62 per annum plus a shift premium of £2,954.40 for working the 3-shift rotation (Combined = £30,651.02 per annum)

  • Overtime payable at 1.5 Mon-Sat and 2.0 for Sun
  • Production Bonus (currently not less than 15p per hour)

Hours : Working Hours are 39 hours per week on 3-shift rotation of Mornings, Afternoons and Nights as follows:

    • Mornings: 6am to 2pm Mon-Thurs, 6am to 1pm Fri
    • Afternoons: 2pm to 10pm Mon-Thurs, 1pm to 8pm Fri
    • Nights: 10pm to 6am Mon-Thurs, 8pm to 3am Fri

Our client, a leading steel company in Barnsley, is seeking a skilled Mechanical Setter/Fitter to join their team. This is a permanent, full-time position in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide support in responding to breakdowns and other operating problems and complete planned maintenance activities to minimise disruption to manufacturing processes

  • Assess planned maintenance activities within the setters shop and diagnose root causes of failures.
  • Establish a safe working area
  • Communicate with machine operators to attain information relating to the deviations
  • Assess the need to isolate in some situations
  • Provide estimates on work completion and repair cycles taking into consideration supply chain elements
  • Undertake appropriate repairs to machinery/sub-assemblies and unit parts
  • Instruct machine operators to test machinery on completion of maintenance activity and report findings
  • Maintain tools and repair equipment to ensure good working order

Maintain detailed maintenance records so that Health and Safety is ensured and recurring problems with machinery, equipment or parts can be identified and addressed

  • Complete work order documents with the relevant information relating to the required maintenance activity
  • Complete take 2s and raise permits to work when the need to isolate occurs
  • Sign off permits when re-engaging power
  • Liaise with machine operators to sign off completed work orders
  • Capture all maintenance activities in relevant recording system
  • Complete appropriate audits on maintenance equipment including 5S
  • Feedback to the relevant individuals on proposed improvements to machinery, operator competence and/or any other relevant information

Set, calibrate or adjust equipment, machinery and instruments so that it complies with production specifications or instructions

  • Identify opportunities to maximise product utilisation within British Standards
  • Respond to observations from machine operators on product calibration
  • Input corrections into operating system
  • Recheck product for new calibration changes
  • Introduce SOP on tasks carried out
  • Stores Inventory and stock levels
  • Ensuring sufficient levels of spare parts to eliminate production stoppages.
  • Standardising parts used across the facility

Technical Competencies:

  • Support work on Cold Rolling lines, maximising rolling gains and ensuring product quality.
  • Maintain Mesh Welders, including weld head equipment, weld presses, welding blocks, and electrode holders.
  • Maintain Butt Welders, including welding heads and welding blocks.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Setter/Fitter in an industrial setting, preferably within the steel industry.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge and experience working with relevant equipment and machinery.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to ensuring high standards of quality and safety.
