A well-established company based in Laindon, Essex, is seeking an Automation Technician to join its Electrical and Automation Department. The company operates from a purpose-built design, engineering, and headquarters facility, employing around 70 staff at this location.

Specializing in the design and assembly of filling and packaging lines for aerosols, the company serves various industries, including pharmaceutical and cosmetics. Equipment is sourced from leading manufacturers, and it is then integrated with custom-built conveyors, enclosures, electrical control systems, and ancillary equipment.

All panel building, wiring, and PLC programming are conducted on-site, with additional departments handling machine assembly, commissioning, and documentation.

About the Role

This is a dynamic position that requires a strong understanding of electrical drawings, control panel specification/design, PLC programming, touchscreens, and control systems, as well as knowledge of vision and SCADA systems. Experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or explosive atmosphere regulations is desirable.

The role involves close collaboration with electricians and panel builders to design and construct control systems, followed by programming and commissioning machines both in the factory and on-site.

Essential Requirements:

  • Formal Electrical Engineering Qualification (e.g., apprenticeship)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing PLC-based electrical control systems from design specifications
  • Programming PLC, touchscreen, and safety-configurable relay systems
  • Configuring remote I/O, servo motor, and inverter drives
  • Integrating vision systems and other ancillary equipment into production lines
  • Fault-finding on electrical control systems, PLCs, and hardwired systems
  • Conducting commissioning, support, and service work at customer sites

A certain amount of travel will be required to support a worldwide customer base.

Training will be provided to ensure familiarity with the specialist machinery and equipment. The successful candidate will also be eligible for a pension scheme and other generous benefits.
