Server Engineer (3rd Line)

The purpose of this post is to enable outstanding support for learners and staff in terms of IT availability. You will ensure that equipment and software work correctly, deploy new and existing equipment and ensure that the infrastructure is working optimally and available when needed.

Description

Server Engineer (3rd Line)

  • To be responsible for the servers (and their replacements) so that they are working correctly, that faults are resolved within KPIs and planned maintenance works are carried out without impacting operations.
  • To be responsible that the virtualisation hypervisors, Microsoft HyperV and VMware ESXi, are working correctly, that faults are resolved within KPIs and planned maintenance works and security updates are carried out without impacting operations.
  • To be responsible for the SAN\NAS system so that is operating correctly, that faults are resolved within KPIs and planned maintenance works are carried out without impacting operations.
  • To monitor the performance of the server infrastructure systems, including the networking interconnects, identifying trends and potential issues and reporting these and potential solutions to the Head of IT Support (HITS)
  • To be responsible for the operation of the windows servers (2016 to 2022) and various Linux servers running in the college. To ensure that they are maintained and updated, and replacements are planned and carried out to ensure systems are running supported OS's.
  • To use college systems, to verify availability and end user details
  • To configure accounts and other IT systems for end users
  • To assist the rest of the IT team with 2nd and 3rd line support as appropriate
  • To work with the Head of IT Support and others to plan, document and test the Disaster Recover procedures and keep such documentation and process updated and current.

Profile

Server Engineer (3rd Line)

  • Degree in computing or related engineering subject
  • Microsoft Specialist certification (Windows Server Hyper V)
  • Experience of VEEAM backup and replication suite
  • Microsoft Windows Server Hyper V
  • Windows Server 2016 or above
  • VMware ESXi
  • Active Directory
  • Azure\Entra
  • Experience of using and configuring SAN\NAS devices
  • Experience and knowledge of iSCSI
  • Experience of enterprise level backup solutions
  • Experience of installing, configuring and using performance monitoring tools
  • Experience of using, maintaining, fault finding and installing windows 2016 servers and above in a virtualised environment
  • Experience and understanding of using and configuring DNS, DHCP & Radius within windows
