Locum Consultant Anaesthetist

Location: Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester

Rate: 53 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist to support the services at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This full-time 10 PA position is based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals (BNHH), though there is potential to provide some cross-site anaesthetic sessions depending on service needs.

The successful candidate will join our friendly anaesthetic consultant team and provide leadership and supervision to junior and mid-grade doctors across both hospital sites. This role will involve working with a multidisciplinary pain team, consisting of consultant anaesthetists, specialist pain nurses, physiotherapists, and a pain psychologist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Duties:
    • Provide safe, effective, responsive, and compassionate anaesthetic services at a consultant level.
    • Agree and work flexibly with the Clinical Director in Anaesthetics to accommodate departmental needs.
    • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, and evidence-based research to maintain and enhance clinical standards.
    • Be involved in clinical governance, including incident reporting, investigation of serious incidents, and addressing complaints.
    • Contribute to training junior doctors, providing tutorials, educational supervision, and guidance on the Royal College of Anaesthetists' curriculum.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
    • Work with the pain management team alongside other anaesthetists, pain nurses, physiotherapists, and psychologists.
    • Foster teamwork and leadership within the department and across the Trust.

About Us

Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH)

  • Provides anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery across 7 main theatres, 4 day-case theatres, 1 ophthalmic theatre, and 2 obstetric theatres.
  • The Critical Care Unit has 18 beds, catering for intensive care and high dependency care, with around 1,050 admissions per year.
  • Provides 24/7 access to trauma lists and CEPOD theatre services.

Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH)

  • Anaesthesia services are provided in 5 Nightingale theatres and 3 day-case theatres.
  • The Critical Care Unit cares for up to 10 patients, including both HDU (level 2) and ICU (level 3) patients, with approximately 600 admissions annually.

Who We Are Looking For

Essential Qualifications:

Full GMC Registration and on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or will obtain within 6 months of interview).

MBBS or equivalent.

FRCA & CCT in Anaesthesia (or CESR).

Desirable Qualifications:

Membership of relevant specialist societies.

MD or equivalent.

Essential Experience & Knowledge:

Experience in general and regional anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties.

Leadership skills and ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.

Understanding of clinical governance and NHS practices.

Desirable Skills:

Experience in NHS management courses and leadership roles.

Critical approach to knowledge acquisition and commitment to research.

Research & Teaching:

Commitment to the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates.

Evidence of active participation in audit and clinical governance projects.
