An esteemed laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join their virology section, which provides crucial diagnostic and statutory services. This role involves testing for viruses, viral antibodies, and notifiable diseases, including Johne’s disease, and supports both national and international health initiatives such as the BVD virus eradication program.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Collection, sorting, and opening of samples, recording any non-conformances in Excel spreadsheets, and alerting the Lab Manager.
  • Data input into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and ensuring clear labelling of samples.
  • Preparation of samples for testing using a variety of microbiological techniques.
  • Adherence to ISO17025 standards and maintaining high levels of safety and compliance within the microbiological laboratory.
  • Maintenance of laboratory records, including managing Excel spreadsheets, scanning, filing, and emailing paperwork to clients.
  • Disposal of laboratory waste and responsibility for routine cleanliness, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support the laboratory’s operations and compliance.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs including a science subject.
  • A general science background is beneficial.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Flexibility in working hours to meet the demands of the role.

This role is a temporary position and expected to be 3 months initially. The location in Stormont is fairly rural so access to your transport is essential to being able to get to the location daily.
