About the Role

As the most senior tax professional in the business, you'll be responsible for leading tax strategy and compliance across the UK and wider European operations. You'll work cross-functionally with senior stakeholders, ensuring a proactive, risk-managed approach to all tax matters - from governance to planning, advisory to reporting. You'll also lead a capable and growing team, driving a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and trusted partnership with wider business functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the overall tax strategy for UK and European operations, ensuring robust compliance across direct, indirect, and employment taxes
  • Act as a strategic business partner, advising on commercial initiatives, group structuring, and M&A activity from a tax perspective
  • Maintain trusted relationships with HMRC and other relevant authorities, managing risk and ensuring proactive engagement
  • Oversee the accurate and timely preparation and submission of all tax filings and financial disclosures, with final sign-off responsibility
  • Provide strategic oversight of international tax matters, including transfer pricing, customs, and global mobility issues
  • Monitor legislative changes, including OECD developments, and advise on implications for the business
  • Drive continuous improvement in processes and controls, championing the use of technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing in-house tax team, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and growth
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure tax implications are considered in operational and strategic decisions across the business
  • Offer clear, commercially-minded tax advice across all departments, translating technical information into actionable guidance
What We're Looking For
  • Proven experience at a senior tax leadership level within a large corporate, ideally in retail, FMCG, or other complex, high-volume sectors
  • Strong technical background across a broad range of tax disciplines (direct, indirect, international, employment)
  • ACA / CTA / ACCA qualified or equivalent
  • Deep understanding of UK tax governance and control frameworks
  • Commercially savvy, with the ability to translate tax risks and opportunities into broader business implications
  • Demonstrated leadership capability - strategic thinker, effective team builder, and confident decision maker
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills at executive level
