Role Summary:
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and optimisation of complex mechanical systems and components. This role involves taking a project from concept through production, applying advanced engineering principles, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring innovative thermal management solutions to life, in growing net zero electrical vehicle applications. You will play a key role in guiding the design process, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring design quality and compliance with industry standards.
Areas of Responsibility
Key Responsibilities
- Product Development: Lead the design and development of mechanical components and systems, from concept through to production, ensuring designs meet performance, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
- 3D CAD Modeling and Simulation: Create detailed 3D models, perform simulations, and validate designs using CAD and CAE tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Bysotronic).
- Prototyping and Testing: Develop and oversee the prototyping process, conduct tests to validate design concepts, and troubleshoot issues to refine designs.
- Project Management: Plan and manage project timelines, deliverables, and budgets, ensuring projects stay on schedule and within budget.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure designs meet industry standards and regulatory requirements, and conduct design reviews for quality and accuracy.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to optimise designs for production and assembly.
- Mentorship: Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and support in developing their technical skills and advancing their careers.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with a proven track record of successful product launches.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Pro/E).
- Experience with FEA and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus).
- Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, machining, metal forming).
- Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Project Management: Demonstrated project management skills, with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Attention to Detail: High attention to detail and commitment to quality in all aspects of design work.
Experience, Education & Training:
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license, Chartered Engineer (CEng) or other relevant certifications.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software, ERP systems, and other project management tools.
- Leadership Experience: Previous experience leading engineering teams or projects.
Work Environment
- This position may involve occasional travel to manufacturing sites or vendor facilities.
- Primarily office-based with time spent in lab settings for prototyping and testing.
