Birmingham Botanical Gardens - Treasurer & Chair of Finance
Are you an experienced finance professional with a passion for conservation, education, and heritage? Birmingham Botanical Gardens (BBG) is seeking a dedicated Treasurer/Chair of Finance to join our Board of Trustees. This is an unpaid voluntary role, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to a historic charity at a pivotal moment in its growth.
About Birmingham Botanical Gardens:
Established in 1832, BBG is one of the UK's only two independent charitable botanical gardens. Spanning 15 acres just a mile from Birmingham city centre, it houses a collection of over 7,000 plant species, making it the most diverse botanic collection in central England. Each year, BBG welcomes over 200,000 visitors, offering an oasis in the city while delivering educational programs for schools, colleges, and the public. As an independent charity BBG relies on visitors, donors, grants, and revenue from hosting weddings and events.
The Role:
BBG is embarking on a transformative £19+ million capital project to safeguard its future. As Treasurer/Chair of Finance, you will:
- Provide strategic financial leadership and governance.
- Scrutinise budgets, management accounts, and cash flow.
- Advise the Board on financial stability and growth.
- Ensure compliance with legal and financial best practices.
- Work closely with the Chair, Chief Executive, and Finance team to maintain financial oversight.
- Chair the Finance & General Purposes subcommittee.
We estimate a time commitment of up to two days per month.
Who We Are Looking For:
We are seeking an individual with:
- A formal accountancy qualification (or significant financial expertise).
- Experience handling financial challenges in major projects.
- Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills.
- The ability to provide constructive challenge and feedback.
- Experience in risk analysis and financial governance.
