The Project:

Dewey Group is currently recruiting for a Commercial Manager to work with a highly respected piling contractor in the Midlands. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional to oversee commercial operations across various projects. The role will involve significant responsibility, including managing financial aspects, liaising with clients, and working closely with both the Estimating and Finance teams.

Job Description:

As a Commercial Manager, you will report to the Managing Director and will be responsible for the commercial management of multiple projects. This includes cost monitoring, contract administration, liaising with clients, and managing the financial success of each project. You will have the opportunity to work autonomously while maintaining a close relationship with other teams in the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and agree Subcontract conditions.
  • Monitor and report on costs and revenue to ensure profitability across projects.
  • Manage payment applications and resolve any payment disputes or delays.
  • Oversee post-contract administration and ensure all financial aspects are tracked.
  • Conduct credit checks on clients, secure additional credit insurance when necessary, and manage payment processes.
  • Work closely with Estimating and Contracts teams to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Regularly visit project sites to monitor performance and report any risks to senior management.
  • Ensure stakeholders fully understand and adhere to contractual obligations.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior Quantity Surveyors and team members.
  • Manage subcontract accounts from procurement through to final account submission.
  • Support the tendering and procurement process by reviewing requirements and providing commercial input.
  • Identify, value, and agree on variations with clients and subcontractors.
  • Prepare Final Accounts with full supporting documentation.
  • Assist with loss and expense claims and adjudication claims/dispute resolution.
  • Conduct Monthly CVR analysis to ensure projects remain financially on track.
  • Ensure compliance with Collateral Warranties and other contractual terms.

Experience, Skills & Attributes:

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager within the Civil Engineering or Construction sectors.
  • Experience in specialist sub-contracting, particularly in the piling or geotechnical engineering sector, is desirable.
  • A degree in Quantity Surveying or related field is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, especially geotechnical activities.
  • Familiarity with GE contract conditions.
  • Excellent commercial awareness with strong numeracy and financial management skills.
  • A confident negotiator with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong IT skills, including knowledge of relevant project costing software and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to make quick decisions when necessary.
