Hybrid working; from home, our office at One Strawberry Lane, Newcastle Upon Tyne (if you are local to the area) or you can be based from one of our other national offices, with occasional national travel

Typical day as Data Protection Manager

  • Ensuring strong data governance is in place to mitigate data risks.  
  • You’ll monitor and measure data protection and implement robust processes, practices and carry out data audits.
  • Build and maintain positive stakeholder relationships to ensure data protection principles and obligations are integrated into all business operations, supporting positive change.
  • Lead and develop our data protection team, managing workloads and providing expert technical advice and guidance to the team and Home Group colleagues on data protection issues. 
  • Undertake designated Data Protection Officer duties, working closely with Austin our Data Protection Officer/Director of Legal. This includes responding to data protection queries, assessing data risks in any given project, and providing advice on potential breaches and regulatory requirements.
  • Staying up to date with changes in data protection laws and regulations so we remain compliant, contributing to the development of registers, processes, and systems for managing and recording data.  
  • You’ll ensure all colleagues understand their data protection responsibilities which may include delivering training and workshops.

You have 

  • Proven experience as a Data Protection Officer or lead data protection specialist with a qualification such as CIPP/E or equivalent.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience of data protection law, able to advise confidently on a wide range of queries and report on data protection risks.   
  • A strong track record in creating strategies and governance to ensure data protection compliance and drive improvements in process, systems and culture.
  • Experience managing a data protection team, guiding, supporting, and building competence.
  • You will be a great influencer, understand how your role makes a difference to customers and able to explain the reasons behind key decisions, able to take people with you.
  • Due to limits on our current certificates of sponsorship, we are not able to offer sponsorship to external candidates for this role.  This remains under regular review

Job details

  • Flexible working hours, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.  If you need to nip out to walk the dog or do the school run, we’re ok with that too!
  • This is a hybrid role and you’ll spend a couple of days a week at our office at One Strawberry Lane, Newcastle Upon Tyne (or if you are not local to the area you can be based from one of our other national office locations). There will be the occasional bit of travel to our locations to support our colleagues and the rest you’ll work from home.
