Data Architect

Location: BirminghamContract: Day rate of £600-£650, inside IR35

Duration: 6 months (with opportunity for multiple extensions)

Role Purpose:We are working with a reputable client in Birmingham who are looking to bring in a Data Architect on an interim basis. The Data Architect will play a pivotal role in designing, building, maintaining, and operating both existing and new data models to support the strategic, regulatory, and operational needs of our organisation. Reporting to the Head of Planning & Architecture, you will manage the end-to-end design of data models, engage with business users to define data requirements, and work hands-on to maintain data models. You will also lead a small team of Data Engineers, collaborating closely with the Business Improvement and Business Intelligence (BI) teams who generate reports from these models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and document project and BAU (Business as Usual) requirements for regulatory and operational data.
  • Document and roadmap data models across applications such as web platforms, CRM systems, public websites, and internal databases, including Azure-based data models.
  • Collaborate with the Enterprise Architect to design and lead the ICT data strategy across all systems, ensuring effective data flow from ingress to egress.
  • Partner with business units, ICT, and third-party providers to deliver project and BAU data model updates.
  • Lead, motivate, and coach a team of Data Engineers, ensuring efficient data manipulations.
  • Hands-on design, implementation, and maintenance of data models in line with the ICT data strategy.
  • Ensure security, integrity, durability, and optimal performance of all data.
  • Oversee bulk data import/export and manage ETL processes across systems.
  • Work with the BI team to understand reporting requirements and model data to meet reporting needs.
  • Review and refactor DAX measures in Power BI to align with data model standards.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive experience in defining, leading, and operating large-scale data models with high availability.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into data models, with strong communication skills across technical and business domains.
  • Experience in data platform development, managing large datasets, and implementing data solutions to support business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coach a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and relevant technologies.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Azure, Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Power BI, Dynamics 365 CRM, and DevOps.

Desirable Skills:

  • Familiarity with the legal or regulatory sector.
  • Understanding of data legislation (e.g., Freedom of Information, Data Protection Act).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies for technical solution delivery.
