Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Key Role Overview:

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for overseeing and actively contributing to the design process. This includes supervising the electrical design of products while implementing risk mitigation and design validation techniques to ensure the design is fit for purpose, compliant with all technical and legislative standards, and suitable for manufacturing. The role requires technical analysis of design functionality and suitability, ensuring alignment with specified technical and regulatory requirements. The engineer will document these findings in formalized reports for client approval.

 Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Educational Background: A relevant degree combined with at least five years of experience in the MOD, Aerospace, Defence, or Marine sectors.
  • Electrical and Power System Design Skills: Proficiency in system design and component selection.
  • Control & Instrumentation Expertise: Demonstrated experience in the design of control and instrumentation systems.
  • Relevant Technical Experience: Familiarity with Variable Speed Drives, Motor Starter Panels, Distribution Systems, PLC, and Control Systems (ProfiBus, ProfiNet, or TIA Portal).
  • FMEA & Safety Skills: Competence in drafting safety assessments and conducting reliability analysis.
  • Testing & Automation Knowledge: Experience with National Instruments (NI) hardware and LabVIEW software.
  • Software Skills: Familiarity with E-Plan and SolidWorks Electrical is advantageous.

 Core Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Electrical Drawings and Bills of Materials: Produce detailed electrical drawings (schematic and wiring) using SolidWorks Electrical/E-Plan and prepare Bills of Materials to support the design phase and conversion to manufacturing.
  • Design Documentation: Develop and compile the necessary documentation to substantiate designs, including performance calculations, test plans, and justifications for materials and component selections.
  • Technical Compliance: Ensure the electrical design complies with client specifications, including safety and legislative requirements.
  • Integrated Design: Collaborate with mechanical engineers to deliver a fully integrated solution.
  • Design Process Adherence: Follow the design process to confirm all risk mitigation measures and approvals are obtained at the appropriate stages.

 

Key Accountabilities:

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will be accountable for delivering a technical solution that meets the design specifications and guarantees the product's suitability for manufacturing, assembly, and testing. Additionally, they are responsible for generating technical documentation of an acceptable quality and providing adequate technical input to evaluate the functionality and suitability of the design in line with specified technical and legislative criteria.
