Overview

The Head of Finance is a senior leadership role within a Membership Body, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects, ensuring sustainability, providing strategic insights, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The role includes reviewing and improving financial reporting systems.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement financial strategy aligned with long-term goals.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to the Board and senior management.
  • Evaluate and manage financial risks to protect assets.
  • Lead or assist in developing a new financial reporting system with the IT team.

Financial Management

  • Prepare and oversee annual budgets and long-term financial plans.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly financial reporting, with hands-on involvement.
  • Manage cash flow, forecasting, and reserves.

Compliance and Accounting

  • Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee VAT returns, PAYE, NIC, statutory records, and Companies House filings.
  • Manage audits, liaise with auditors, and review financial statements.
  • Collaborate with tax advisors as needed.

Governance and Policy

  • Work with the Board and finance committee to ensure governance adherence.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and controls.

Team Leadership

  • Lead the finance team, including purchase ledger, credit control, and management accounts teams.
  • Conduct appraisals and support team development.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Proven financial leadership experience, ideally in a not-for-profit or membership organisation.
  • Strong financial management, accounting, and regulatory knowledge.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
  • Proficiency with financial software and reporting systems.

Desired

  • ACA, CIMA, or ACCA qualification.
