Hays are working with a local Birmingham-based council to recruit a qualified lawyer. In this hybrid role, you will provide quality practical advice and support on public procurement and commercial contracts, including contract negotiation, drafting, and contract disputes. You will also assist our Principal Lawyers with specialist and complex contracts, procurement work, and high-level projects.

This is a hybrid role, and is paying between £60-£65 per hour.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Providing quality practical advice and support on public procurement and commercial contracts, including contract negotiation, drafting and contract disputes. To provide support to the Principal Lawyers in relation to specialist and complex contract and procurement work and high-level projects.
  • To work collaboratively, manage and prioritise workload to achieve outcomes to timescale.
  • Maintain an awareness of all relevant legislation, policy and regulations, investigate and advise on the implications of changing legislation, case law and codes of practice and policy and provide training where necessary
  • To supervise and assist in the supervision of the work of such other members of staff within the section as required.
  • To assist with the introduction, operation and upgrading of relevant information technology systems and procedures within the team. To run all cases through the case management system and record on the same in line with the iCasework policy.
  • To attend and advise such committees, boards or panels as may be required.
  • To participate in the introduction and maintenance of quality and other initiatives within Legal Services, in particular performance management, Best Value, and the Law Society's Practice Management Standards.

In order to be successful in this role, you will:

  • Be a qualified lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (FCILEx)).
  • Have significant post-qualification experience.
  • Have experience in a Local Authority or public sector setting, focusing on contracts and procurement.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to manage a heavy caseload.
  • Possesses excellent client care skills.
  • Have existing management experience.
