Reed Further Education are working with a college in Birmingham who are looking for a dedicated pastoral mentor to join their team on a temporary ongoing basis. The successful candidate will work to enhance achievement and retention, thereby improving success rates by providing mentoring support to ‘at risk’ learners with a range of support needs, including emotional and behavioural difficulties, mental health, and safeguarding issues.

Job Title: Pastoral Mentor

Position: Mon-Thurs 9:00 to 16:00, Fri 9:00 to 15:30

Role type: Temporary ongoing

Location: Hall Green, Birmingham

Salary: £15 - £18p/h including holiday pay

Day to Day of the role:
  • Assist tutors in supporting ‘at risk’ learners in various settings, including one-on-one or small groups, tutorials, and enrichment activities.
  • Support ‘Looked After/Leaving Care’ learners, liaising with social workers and tutors to carry out Personal Education Plans.
  • Support learners with identified mental health issues, ensuring they are monitored and supported.
  • Act as a first point of contact within the safeguarding triage team.
  • Promote positive behaviour, attendance, and respect among students.
  • Monitor attendance, report on, and follow up with individual targets to improve attendance and punctuality.
Skills and Required Qualifications:
  • Qualified to Level 3.
  • Mentoring/welfare qualification (desirable).
  • Experience working with learners with a range of support needs.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring learners in an educational environment.
  • Good interpersonal and excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
  • Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Office packages and Management Information Systems.
