We are working with a leading facilities management company who are committed to sustainability, safety, and excellence in facilities management. We are looking for a dedicated Mechanical Craftsperson (Water) to join their team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Job Overview

As a Mechanical Craftsperson (Water), you will be responsible for carrying out planned preventive maintenance, testing, and breakdown maintenance on water systems across the estate. This includes ensuring the safe operation of water systems in the Acute Hospital, Retained Estate, and Mental Health Unit, with a focus on maintaining a high standard of service delivery. You will be expected to work independently and as part of a team to support the NHS Trust(s) in delivering a safe and efficient environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Testing: Undertake the maintenance, testing, and breakdown repair of water systems across the estate, including temperature monitoring, shower head cleaning, disinfection, water storage tank cleaning, and legionella control.
  • Compliance: Work to all relevant regulations, codes of practice, Health & Safety requirements, and the company policies. This includes compliance with Legionella regulations and water pathogen management.
  • PPM Work: Perform Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) in line with maintenance instructions and ensure all work is completed on time and to specification.
  • Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records and logbooks, ensuring that all work is documented and up to date. Use systems such as Maximo to log activities and track progress.
  • Health & Safety: Take immediate corrective action in emergency situations to ensure safety and service continuity. Ensure all work is performed safely, with particular attention to safety protocols and statutory regulations.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with colleagues across the Estates team to ensure the smooth operation of water systems and facilities. You may be required to assist with other duties as directed by management.
  • Training & Development: Participate in ongoing training to develop technical skills and knowledge. You may also be required to work in confined spaces or use specialist equipment such as tower scaffolding or MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms).

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • NVQ or C&G Level 2 in Heating, Ventilation, or Plumbing.
  • Awareness of Legionella, TMV (Thermostatic Mixing Valve), and disinfection processes.
  • Knowledge of water systems in commercial or healthcare settings.
  • Understanding of current regulations, codes of practice, and Health & Safety legislation.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working within a healthcare environment.
  • HTM 04 RP/CP training (Healthcare Technical Memorandum 04: Water Systems).
  • Experience working with water systems in large estates or NHS Trusts.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to interpret and work from technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and safety.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
  • Willingness to undertake additional duties and training as required.
