Job Title: RPG Programmer

Location: UK Remote

Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum

Company: Chapman Tate Associates (on behalf of our client, a leading MSP)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance RPG applications on the AS400, IBM iSeries, and related systems
  • Write and optimise RPG code to ensure high performance and functionality for clients
  • Work with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
  • Collaborate with other developers to integrate RPG systems with modern technologies and applications
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with existing RPG applications, providing ongoing support
  • Perform system upgrades, patches, and migrations, ensuring minimal disruption to services
  • Ensure that coding practices align with industry standards and best practices
  • Produce technical documentation and support knowledge sharing within the team

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Strong experience with RPG programming (RPG IV, RPG Free format) on AS400, IBM iSeries, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with DB2 for i (SQL/DB2) and other databases on the IBM iSeries
  • Experience with job scheduling, data transfer, and system integrations
  • Knowledge of CL (Control Language), DDS (Data Description Specifications), and file handling on AS400
  • Understanding of software development methodologies, such as Agile or Waterfall
  • Ability to troubleshoot, debug, and optimise legacy RPG applications
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on attention to detail and quality
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively

Desirable:

  • Experience working with modern technologies and integrating legacy RPG systems with cloud-based or web applications
  • Familiarity with IBM Watson or other IBM services
  • Previous experience in a support or maintenance role for IBM iSeries/AS400 systems
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g., Java, Python) is a bonus
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., IBM iSeries/RPG) are advantageous
