We are currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to support children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs at a specialist SEN school in Bolton As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in providing tailored support for children with SEMH needs, ensuring they are able to access education and develop their social and emotional skills in a safe, nurturing environment.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children who face additional challenges. You will work closely with the class teacher and other specialists to support these students in achieving their academic potential while addressing their emotional and behavioural needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the class teacher in delivering lessons and interventions tailored to children with SEMH needs.
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups to help students engage with the curriculum and regulate their emotions.
  • Assist with classroom management, helping maintain a calm, structured environment that supports emotional wellbeing.
  • Provide behavioural support, guiding students to develop positive social interactions and coping strategies.
  • As a Teaching Assistant, monitor students' progress and provide feedback to teachers regarding their development and emotional needs.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant in an SEN or SEMH setting is highly desirable.
  • A relevant Level 2 or 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of SEMH needs and strategies for supporting children with emotional and behavioural challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • A patient, empathetic approach to supporting students with additional emotional needs as a Teaching Assistant.

Desirable:

  • Experience with SEMH-specific interventions such as the Thrive Approach or Nurture Groups.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and managing challenging behaviours.
  • Experience working with children with additional SEND needs, such as ADHD or Autism.
  • Familiarity with supporting students in preparation for assessments or transitions.
  • Experience in helping children build emotional regulation skills and self-esteem as a Teaching Assistant.
