The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join BEAR Scotland as a Road Safety and Active Travel Engineer. This role offers the chance to contribute to Scotland’s casualty reduction targets and Active Travel aspirations by managing and delivering road safety and Active Travel engineering measures.

The successful candidate will support feasibility studies, accident investigations, and improvement schemes. The position requires collaboration with both internal and sub-contractor resources, ensuring projects are delivered effectively.

Key Responsibilities

As a Road Safety and Active Travel Engineer, you will:

  • Assist in the investigation, design, planning, procurement, and construction management of improvement works on the North-West trunk road network.
  • Prepare reports, feasibility studies, and options assessments.
  • Undertake the detailed design of road safety and Active Travel improvement schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant technical standards, including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
  • Prepare departures from standard, where applicable.
  • Follow Road Safety Audit and Walking, Cycling & Horse-Riding Assessment processes.
  • Produce tender documents, preconstruction information, and construction packages for external tender or in-house contractor delivery.
  • Collaborate with commercial specialists to evaluate tenders and assist with contract awards.
  • Procure, supervise, and measure improvement works.
  • Coordinate with environmental specialists to ensure appropriate environmental screening and mitigation measures are in place prior to commencing work.
  • Follow Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality procedures in line with the company’s Integrated Management Systems.
  • Support team compliance with CDM Regulations, ensuring robust risk assessments are carried out.
  • Use Transport Scotland’s asset management and geographical inventory systems to maintain accurate data and records.
  • Prepare cost estimates and monitor the financial performance of individual schemes.
  • Deliver projects within an annual programme of work.
  • Assist others within the team as applicable to the role.

Your Skills and Experience

We are looking to hear from candidates who possess the following skills and qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience in the investigation, design, and implementation of road safety engineering and Active Travel schemes or other civil engineering design.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software packages.

Desirable:

  • Ability to use AutoCAD software.
  • A full, approved UK driving licence.
