The Role:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing production shifts, ensuring operational efficiency and providing immediate assistance for breakdowns. Responsibilities include conducting both reactive and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment to uphold quality and availability standards. Safety is paramount; thus, securing equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and conducting risk assessments are critical duties. Monitoring plant performance to pre-empt failures and maintaining cleanliness are also key tasks. Collaboration with supervisors, contributing to improvement initiatives, and participating in project discussions are expected. Additionally, the position requires mechanical support during shutdowns, ensuring shift coverage, and flexibility to undertake various tasks as needed by management.
Main Responsibilities:
- Monitor and assist during production shifts, offering prompt assistance for any equipment breakdowns to guarantee optimal plant operation through diligent maintenance.
- Monitor the operational performance of all the entire plant during production, proactively anticipating potential failures to reduce operational interruptions and maintain safe plant operations. Document any plant issues in the shift log to facilitate seamless handovers between teams.
- Perform both reactive and preventive mechanical maintenance to ensure plant reliability, minimize downtime, and uphold product quality.
- Collaborate with the maintenance team to execute maintenance plans and lubrication routines effectively.
- Prioritise safety by ensuring all mechanical plants and equipment are guarded and safe, and that staff are aware of potential hazards.
- Adhere to the company's safety policies, The Health and Safety at Work Act, and any additional safety directives issued.
- Co-operate with the company's permit to work system, conducting thorough risk assessments before engaging with potentially hazardous systems such as steam, compressed air and hydraulic systems.
- Maintain exemplary cleanliness in the workshop and factory areas.
- Support management and colleagues with local project work supporting the execution of engineering projects on-site.
- Propose enhancements and modifications to the plant, and discuss these suggestions with the maintenance team for evaluation.
- Offer proactive mechanical support during scheduled shutdowns and weekly maintenance intervals. Management may limit vacation availability during these periods.
Knowledge, skills and experience required:
- Possess a solid secondary education.
- Time served or suitably recongised qualification in Production or Mechanical Engineering, e.g. ONC, EAL level 3, NVQ in Engineering.
- Demonstratable practical experience in both reactive and preventative mechanical maintenance.
- Possessing a comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in welding, as well as proficiency in pneumatics, hydraulics, and the operation of various plant machinery.
- Recognised Health and Safety qualification, e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH or NVQ
Computer literacy, including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, and experience in relevant software (e.g. design and calculation software).
