Situation

CAF Rail Services, a global leader in the delivery and maintenance of railway vehicles, are seeking a highly motivated and capable Team Leader to join them on the Northern Rail project at Allerton Depot. This role offers the chance to directly impact the operational success of the Northern Rail project and the performance of CAF's fleet, playing a crucial role in maintaining the trains in service.

Working hours: Does involve working days, nights and weekends, must be flexible. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shift Management: Organize the work for your team, ensuring that priorities align with maximizing units in service. You will need to ensure that the shift runs smoothly, and that repairs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Parts Sourcing: Ensure that required parts are sourced and available for ongoing maintenance and repair work. Your ability to quickly identify and secure these parts will be key to minimizing downtime.
  • Hands-On Technical Work: Participate in fault diagnosis and repairs, especially working with modern rolling stock and TCMS (Train Control and Management Systems). This is a hands-on role that requires a strong technical background.
  • Team Management: You’ll have two direct reports, and part of your role will be to manage their day-to-day activities, provide mentorship, and ensure that their development is supported. You'll also be involved in technician interviews and appraisals.
  • Pastoral Care: As a leader, you'll play an important role in ensuring the well-being of your team, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Collaboration with Production Manager: You will work closely with the Production Manager to ensure that all maintenance work is aligned with overall project goals, and will be responsible for communicating issues or problems clearly, especially outside of usual working hours.

Key Requirements:

  • Leadership Experience: You should have previous experience leading a small team.
  • Technical Skills: Strong fault diagnosis experience, particularly on modern rolling stock with a focus on TCMS, is essential. Experience working on the CAF Civity platform of Alstom Aventra platform would be advantageous. You should be comfortable working on the tools yourself when necessary.
  • Time Management & Prioritization: You will need to have excellent time management skills to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize work efficiently. Maximizing train availability is your top priority.
  • Clear Communication: The ability to communicate clearly and concisely with your team, the Production Manager, and other stakeholders is vital. You must be able to handle pressure and effectively solve problems when they arise.
  • Drive & Motivation: We’re looking for someone who is ambitious and eager to develop their career. The current Production Manager has progressed from Technician to Team Leader to Production Manager within three years, showcasing the opportunities for growth within the business.
  • Hands-On Attitude: All CAF managers at Allerton started "on the tools" – this means you need to be willing to get involved in hands-on work and understand the challenges your team faces at the operational level.
