You don;t need to have previous management experience, but you do need to have previously managed people indirectly on projects as a lead, senior or principal engineer.
You may have previously worked in any of the following: Firmware Engineer, Software Development Engineer, Software Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Developer, Embedded Software Engineer, etc.
