Morson Talent are working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector who have a current requirement for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join their client's established site-based team in Somerset. This is a (renewable) contract position – inside IR35.

The successful candidate will comprise part of a wider, multi-national Joint Design Office team responsible for supporting Review and Acceptance of design activities of a classified plant. This dynamic and multi-disciplinary design team undertake the important intelligent customer role on behalf of the Project.

The Joint Design Office (JDO) has been created to reinforce site-based engineering; to quickly respond to engineering queries/problems coming from site construction; to deliver the schedule and to deliver an increased scope of work. By being located close to the construction works, the JDO team are able to quickly react and provide technical solutions/answers – thereby crucially assisting construction teams and saving time.

Overview

  • The M&E Engineer (Mechanical) will support the review and acceptance of changes to the design raised by the site contractors which have been justified by the designer
  • You will be responsible for managing interfaces between the construction contractors and the designers.
  • Working for the nuclear licensee, the successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a team using their own initiative to identify and resolve significant process and technical issues which arise during the course of this rapidly developing project.
  • The successful candidate will work with the safety case team and the plant designers to ensure that engineering requirements are established, adequately justified and correctly appear in the design.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to act as a professional engineer to approve supplier's designs and protect safety case compliance alongside the delivery of critical project milestones
  • The successful candidate will be expected to have knowledge and experience in several of the following areas:
    • Design and assembly of rotating equipment (pumps, motors, etc.) and valves.
    • Design and assembly of tanks.
    • Design and assembly of Heat exchangers and associated regulation and security valves systems.
    • Piping design and erection
    • Welding

Key Responsibilities

  • Responding to and approval of General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Request, and Exemption Requests with the support of the Responsible Designer or site Experts when needed.
  • Challenging design decisions so that engineering and design aligns with the project strategy.
  • Providing adequate oversight to ensure the Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements are met.
  • Co-ordinating support from other external organisations.
  • Contributing to the resolution and closure of Open Points.
  • Assessing technical risk and subsequently addressing this risk.
  • Working effectively with minimal supervision to ensure internal customer's needs are met
  • Accumulating knowledge to understand the design and operational aspects of the EPR systems and the role which these systems have within the nuclear and environmental safety cases
  • Building and maintaining a strong relationship with the Responsible Designer and regulatory bodies.

Skills and experience

  • Typically degree or higher degree in relevant discipline
  • Registered member of a relevant professional institute or qualifications and experience suitable to lead to membership
  • Experience of working within a highly regulated working environment
  • Experience of working in the design and maintenance of heavy mechanical power generation equipment
  • Experience in the development of mechanical related safety cases
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Understanding of Quality Assurance in a highly regulated environment
  • Decision making capability for resolution of safety case issues
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers
