The Opportunity

Are you a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with a passion for cutting-edge projects? Energy is on a mission to construct and operate new nuclear power stations in the UK, with Hinkley Point C (HPC) leading the charge. As part of this landmark project, we're looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the Joint Design Office (JDO) at HPC, focusing on the Equipment scope within the CI/BOP and Nuclear Island buildings.

Contextual Information

As a Mechanical Engineer in the JDO's Review & Acceptance Branch, you will be at the forefront of addressing engineering challenges on-site. Reporting to an Engineering Lead, your expertise will be pivotal in ensuring that equipment such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and pressure equipment meet stringent project requirements. Your role will involve close collaboration with Contractors, Construction, Quality, and Project Management teams, as well as with design teams both on-site and in the back office.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Engineering Query Resolution: Respond to General Queries, Non-Conformances, Change Requests, and Exemption Requests from the MEH and NSSS Contractors with support from the Responsible Designer or site experts.
  • Regulatory Oversight: Ensure compliance with Nuclear Safety and Environmental Regulation requirements.
  • Design Alignment: Challenge and review design decisions to ensure they align with the overall project strategy.
  • Coordination and Support: Work with external organisations to provide necessary engineering support.
  • Risk Management: Assess and mitigate technical risks associated with equipment design and installation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain strong relationships with EPR Engineering (Responsible Designer) and influence diverse stakeholders in a dynamic site environment.
  • Reporting: Provide regular updates to your Engineering Lead, highlighting any issues that may impact the project timeline or quality.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Extensive experience in equipment design, installation, and/or commissioning, with specific expertise in pumps, valves, heat exchangers, or pressure equipment.
  • Strong background in applying multidisciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear or highly regulated industry.
  • In-depth understanding of the construction and installation industry, with a focus on safety and compliance.
  • Familiarity with Health & Safety legislation, including CDM and Nuclear Site License requirements.
  • Experience in welding engineering.
  • Ability to independently manage tasks, proactively address issues, and escalate them as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
