Software and Controls Engineer

We are seeking a Software and Controls Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role involves taking technical responsibility for all assigned control systems, including PLC, HMI, Servo control, 6-axis robotics integration, safety systems, and MES integration programming from initial brief through to final customer acceptance. You will specify, design, and implement machine control systems that meet agreed customer specifications on time and within budget.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Design electrical control systems, control panels, and process schematics.
  • Carry out control risk assessments and specify the Safety Related Parts of the Control System (SRPCS) that meet safety directives and specified PL.
  • Ensure electrical, PLC, and HMI software, pneumatics, and fluids control systems interface and operate correctly and meet the required specifications.
  • Write requirement specifications for PLC programs and HMI software when required.
  • Act as the control design authority for all projects assigned and take full technical ownership, from design to customer acceptance.
  • Develop, test, and evaluate software.
  • Provide design support service to resolve problems during software integration and attend subcontractor premises when required.
  • Attend the final stages of equipment commissioning at customer premises, to demonstrate machine compliance with the design specification, resolve control and electrical problems, and achieve customer acceptance/satisfaction.
  • Liaise with internal engineers and customers (UK and overseas) to establish design requirements and specifications and attend progress meetings as required.
  • Undertake control design activities for new equipment and modify existing systems as required.
  • Ensure all designs comply with design codes of practice and safety standards and that they meet specifications, requirements, and objectives.
  • Travel is a requirement in and outside of the UK when required.
  • Program and integrate different control systems with 6-axis robots and vision systems (preferably ABB and Fanuc).
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Degree in Control or Electrical Engineering (or a closely related discipline).
  • Extensive experience in PLC and HMI programming for Siemens and Mitsubishi.
  • Experience in commissioning drives & servo drives for Siemens, Mitsubishi, and ABB IRC5 programming & operation.
  • MES integration & networking experience, including OPC.
  • Proven experience in programming and control engineering in the design of high-value complex equipment.
  • Machinery Directive/Regulation knowledge & understanding.
  • CAD experience and revision control of documentation.
  • IT skills with a good knowledge of Excel, Word, & Access.
