We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Chemotherapy Clinical Nurse Specialist to join an experienced Oncology Team in a Private Hospital in Hove, East Sussex.

Chemotherapy CNS Job Role:

  • Management of direct patient care and to be responsible for a clinical caseload and safely administer SACT.
  • To work closely with other site-specific Clinical Nurse Specialist and work as a team.
  • Maintain accurate and concise documentation in relation to clinical activities.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies both within and out of the hospital setting to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
  • Provide professional support to colleagues working within the cancer unit setting.
  • To offer patients a Holistic Needs Assessment at relevant points in their pathway. To provide a care plan and if identified referral to Level 3 or Level 4 psychological care providers.
  • Provide specialist advice which is evidence based to deliver clinically effective care to cancer patients and their families in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Promote a culture of respectful relationships through professional role modelling conveying the principles required for nurses to improve the patients experience e.g. Pre-SACT consultation, understanding and involving patients in their care.
  • Evaluate and assess patients and their family’s needs and treat, support and refer as appropriate
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding in the administration of chemotherapy including intravenous access, management of central venous access, venepuncture and management of extravasation
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding around the use of SACT within multiple tumour sites, including haemato-oncology. This should include the associated toxicities associated with administration.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of in-house education and training programmes (including competency based assessment and review). Share skills and knowledge through teaching sessions.
  • Carry out SACT formal assessment for the nurses who have completed the SACT course and UKONS Passport
  • Support the direction of leadership programmes in the development of new clinical roles. Assisting with innovations in oncology.
  • Participate in forums/committees throughout the hospital
  • To continue to develop and consolidate own training programme in line with personal development plan as agreed with line manager.
  • Work closely with the Cancer Pharmacy team to review SACTs protocols in relation to National guidelines and appraise new drugs and training for administration of the new drugs.
  • Link with company product representatives to ensure practice with technology is in keeping with current research findings and product availability.
  • Participate in the 24 hour telephone triage service for patients and support the ongoing education of the UKONS 24 hour triage tool
  • Work with the tumor specific CNS team to promote end of treatment courses.

Who are we looking for?

  • Registered General Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience of working at a senior level within cancer services and the administration of SACT
  • Hold an accredited SACT administration course
  • Demonstrate considerable post registration competency in the UKONS 24 Hour triage tool
  • Post registration course within cancer care desirable
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to organise work around competing demands on time
  • Demonstrate that can work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate computer literacy skills including use of Microsoft Office software packages, internet & email
