Sports Centre Leisure Apprentice

The College is seekingĀ to appoint a Sports Centre Leisure Apprentice

Reporting to:Ā Head of Sports and Science Facilities

Apprenticeship Overview:

Working as part of a team, it is the responsibility of the Sports Centre Leisure Apprentice to undertake a range of operational duties such as assisting with the opening and closing of the facility, undertaking routine maintenance of equipment and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the environment. Alongside these operational functions they ensure programmed activities and services are available for students and staff.

The apprenticeship programme through Creative Sport and Leisure covers a duration of 18 months and provides an opportunity to develop skills across a whole range of activities the centre provides. There are five key areas of work all leisure team members will cover:

  • Leisure and fitness operations
  • Lifeguard duties
  • Swimming teaching duties
  • Gym instruction
  • Leading group activities

Full training will be given and will lead to the possible attainment of the nationally recognised qualifications below. You will be given an Individual Learning Plan for the following qualifications, which you will undertake in and around your working hours:

  • One of the following: Swim Englandā€™s Level 1 and 2 Teaching Swimming or a STA Level 1 and 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming.
  • A Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction awarded by; 1st4sport qualifications, Active IQ, Innovate Awarding, NCFE, VCTC or YMCA Awards.
  • A Level 3 certificate in First Aid.
  • Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills (English & Maths), if required.

Person Specification:

  • Interest and/or background in swimming or sports.
  • Highly organised.
  • Good time management.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Motivated to learn and achieve new qualifications.
  • Ability to consider how equalities, diversity and inclusion matters should be considered in a leisure and sports environment.

Candidates should be able to achieve the following as part of the swimming test:

  • Jump/dive into deep water.
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds.
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.
  • Tread water for 30 seconds.
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool.
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps.

Hours of Work:

You will be required to work 30 hours per week as directed by the Head of Sport and Science Facilities. This will include early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Remuneration:

The salary for this role will be *Ā£8.00 per hour for the first 12 months. The hourly rate will then move to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage, depending on age, thereafter. *Under review with an increase anticipated with effect 1 April 2025. Further details available at interview.
