Estimator - Civils & Groundworks Contractor

Bristol or Weston-super-Mare

I’m currently recruiting for an Estimator, to work for a regional civils and groundworks contractor on a permanent basis. Our client specialise in the following areas:

  • Commercial
  • Education
  • Health
  • Leisure
  • Ministry of Defence
  • Ministry of Justice

Job Purpose:

As an Estimator, you will be responsible for producing accurate and competitive estimates for a wide variety of civil engineering and groundworks projects. You will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, ensuring that our bids are precise, commercially viable, and align with client expectations. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Estimator to advance their career within a respected regional contractor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop accurate cost estimates for civils and groundworks projects.
  • Manage the tendering process from initial enquiry through to final submission, ensuring all deadlines are met.
  • Undertake detailed cost analysis of materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor services, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to secure the best rates and ensure clarity on project specifications.
  • Conduct site visits and surveys to assess project requirements and constraints.
  • Prepare and present final tender proposals, clearly outlining scope, exclusions, and project timelines.
  • Work closely with the project delivery team to ensure budget adherence during the construction phase.
  • Keep up to date with market trends, construction costs, and supplier prices to ensure competitive pricing strategies.
  • Negotiation: Negotiate with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to secure the best possible terms for the business.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience as an Estimator within the civils and groundworks sector.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering and groundworks processes and costs.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficient in using estimating software (e.g., Conquest, Causeway, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously.
  • A proactive and flexible approach, with a focus on problem-solving.
  • A good knowledge of local suppliers, subcontractors, and industry rates is desirable.
  • Full UK driving licence is essential.

Qualifications:

  • A degree or HND/HNC in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field (desirable but not essential).
  • Membership of a professional body (e.g., RICS, CIOB, ICE) is advantageous but not essential.
  • Minimum of 3 years of estimating experience in the civils and groundworks sector.
