Principal Electrical System Specialist

Hatched Talent Solutions are partnering with a market leading renewables business who are looking for a Principal Electrical System Specialist to lead all electrical engineering aspects of our products and services.


Their tidal turbine generation systems span from rotor to grid, consisting of MV generators, switchgear, subsea cables and connectors, power converters, balance of plant, a wide range of instrumentation and monitoring systems, actuators and drives, PLC control systems and plant SCADA systems.


This is a varied role requiring an experienced professional with a broad understanding of electrical engineering in a renewable power generation context.


As the Principal Electrical Systems Specialist, you will lead electrical engineering workstreams, from concept design through to FAT, commissioning and in-service support. You will work independently, collaborate within the team, understand the applicable supply chain and develop partnerships that will enable them to fulfil their objectives.


Please note - this is not a management role and you will need to be able to confidently propose and review solutions by coming up with your own innovative ideas and assessing others to ultimately make a recommendation on what should be done in your domain.


Others do the detailed design. The role will develop over time as their projects deliver. There will be the opportunity to lead.


Key Accountabilities
Develop detailed work breakdowns and prioritisation of tasks to deliver project scope.
Deliver the tasking efficiently through independent work and managing execution by external suppliers.
Produce and/or lead and review documentation and analyses such as technical requirement specifications, scopes of work, bases of design, engineering design reports, electrical schematics, single line diagrams, power flow analyses, harmonic studies, protection studies, grid code compliance documents, detailed component specifications.
Specify and review solutions for LV and MV systems, rotating machines, power converters,
switchgear, protective devices, transformers, cables, control panels, metering, instrumentation,
earthing systems, energy storage systems.
Support the verification and validation process, from requirements definition, through formal design reviews, to FAT and hands-on commissioning.
Identify and apply relevant regulations, standards and industry practices.


It is important that you have:
An enthusiastic and proactive attitude.
A degree in a relevant engineering discipline and domain knowledge gained through relevant experience (minimum 5 years in industry) providing you with the confidence to lead activities within your specialism.
An ability to solve complex problems using innovative thinking.
Significant design and build experience as part of a multi-disciplinary team, preferably including electrical power systems, instrumentation and control systems and system modelling.
Experience in delivering relevant engineering services throughout the project lifecycle; design, build, FAT, installation, commissioning and in-service.
Proven track record of delivering to time and cost targets and acceptable quality standards including day-to-day management of partners and contractors.
Significant experience of verbal and written technical communications including presentation of outputs to internal stakeholders, origination and verification of reports and specifications,
drawings and other design data, to a very high professional standard.
Experience of simulation and analysis of electrical power systems.
Excellent planning and organisational skills, time keeping and teamwork


It would also be valuable if you have:
Experience in wind or other renewable energy systems
Experience in subsea/offshore power distribution
Experience working with the National Grid or a District Network Operator
Experience planning and executing integration, test and commissioning activities.
Ability to work with suitably qualified electrical technicians and Senior Authorised Persons to carry out electrical installation works
