Health and Safety Advisor | Bristol Portishead | £50,000 - £55,000 | Full-time permanent

 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health and Safety Advisor to join our client, a leading construction contractor renowned for their quality and innovation. With a wide range of projects in sectors such as Civil Engineering and Energy, this is an excellent opportunity to join a growing company with a strong focus on personal development and work-life balance.

In this role, you will provide ongoing safety support to a COMAH site near Portishead. Working closely with site management teams, technicians, and client safety teams, you will champion HSEQ initiatives and monitor site safety performance to ensure compliance with ISO45001 Safety, Quality, and Environment Management systems, as well as company policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Production and Engineering Management teams in developing risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Supporting the maintenance of the site's environmental management system and compiling reports in line with the requirements of the Environmental Permit
  • Establishing and implementing suitable HSE inspection and auditing programmes, including maintaining and following up on corrective action databases and tracking KPIs
  • Facilitating the development and delivery of site safety meetings and other safety communications
  • Reviewing, devising, writing, and implementing health, safety, and environmental procedures
  • Advising, coaching, and mentoring employees on compliance with their legal health and safety duties
  • Investigating accidents, incidents, and near-misses and issuing reports, as well as maintaining the SHE Incident log
  • Supporting the delivery of SHE training and managing the competency matrix
  • Maintaining competent authority communication logs and preparing reports for the competent authority as needed
  • Preparing for emergencies in line with the site's COMAH Emergency Plan
  • Conducting fire risk assessments
  • Identifying cultural and behavioural issues related to the safety management plan and implementing mitigation strategies

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous health and safety experience in a similar role
  • Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to make effective decisions
  • The ability to communicate with a wide range of people, balancing conflicting requirements
  • A NEBOSH Certificate as a minimum
  • At least five years' previous experience in health and safety within a manufacturing environment, with previous experience in a high hazard industry or with chemicals preferred
  • Previous experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Previous experience with Competence and Training Management Systems preferred
  • Knowledge of Process Safety, Human Factors, and Behavioural Safety
