L3Harris in Bristol/Burgess Hill/Barrow provides enduring, robust and cutting-edge Integrated Platform Management Systems (IPMS) for the UK Royal Navy sub-surface and surface fleets, notably current Astute submarine and Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) aircraft carriers, in-build Type 26 and Type 31 frigates. We are seeking an enthusiastic degree qualified engineer (or equivalent) to join a growing systems engineering team. The successful applicant will receive exposure and experience working on large scale projects with opportunities to advance their career in the field of systems engineering.

The role

Be a leading member of a team of Systems Engineers to perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. As a leading member of the Systems Engineering team the candidate will ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule and cost constraints. Responsible for the performance of functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

What we're looking for

Requirements Engineering:

  • Definition and management of system level requirements.
  • Management of Verification and Validation (V&V) evidence and understand the importance of traceability to customer requirements.
  • Experience of managing system level compliance documentation and management of concessions.
  • Reviewing and communicating the impact of changes to the technical baseline.
  • Development of V&V test plans.
  • To review the verification evidence received from key suppliers for compliance, either personally or through liaison with suitably qualified experienced personnel.
  • Support lower-level decomposition of requirements traceable to customer requirements.
  • Produce and/or support production of subsystem definitions and equipment specifications, in support of hardware engineering business functions.
  • Production of acceptance and selection criteria; and the technical evaluation of supplier responses.

Engineering Process:

  • Experienced in design and review processes.
  • Experience of managing technical queries, risk and the engineering change management process.
  • Collaborate with other business functions to produce and review engineering work packages and associated work breakdown structures.
  • Provide systems engineering leadership, proactively champion initiatives to improve engineering quality and ensure engineering process is maintained and used across the engineering function.

Architectural Design:

  • Support domain specialists in the definition and management of subsystem black box, white box and system interface diagrams.

Other:

  • Support design reviews and workshops to gain acceptance of the company designs from customer and project team stakeholders.
  • To capture voids in designs and present these to stakeholders.
  • Other ad hoc tasks as agreed with the line manager or work package lead.
  • Provide technical representation for the company to customers and suppliers and deputise for technical managers on occasions.

Essential for the role:

  • Equivalent of bachelor's degree and minimum 7 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 5 years of prior related experience working on complex engineering projects.
  • Excellent planning, communications, and co-ordination skills.
  • Excellent IT skills (Experience with DOORS is essential).
  • Excellent understanding of systems concepts, context, boundaries, interfaces, system hierarchy and the principles of system partitioning in order to help manage complexity.
  • Understands the characteristics of good quality requirements, elicitation methods and tools.
  • Good understanding of requirements engineering within Defence Projects.
  • Broad knowledge of Systems Design methodologies.
  • Able to understand detail and a low level of fidelity in technical decision making.
  • Knowledge of marine systems engineering would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Experience of creating the engineering management plans for a project.
  • Experience of early lifecycle product development and work on the front side of the 'V-model'.
  • To 'fill gaps' in the engineering team by quickly understanding wider engineering areas (outside of specialism) to support design and understand engineering strategies - EMC, Safety, ILS, etc..
