Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client, a Maritime and Defence supplier is looking for Mechanical Design Engineers to join them on a contract basis.

• Due to the nature of the role, applicants must hold the sole British nationality and be eligible for SC Clearance.
• 6 month contract.
• Hybrid working out of either Bristol or Barrow-in-Furness.
• OUTSIDE IR35, rates are open to negotiation.

Responsible for the design, layout, testing and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices or systems. Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval. Analyses mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Investigates solutions to product or process problems. Consolidates results of mechanical design elements for assigned projects. Conducts investigations involving the origination or modification of material, component or process specifications or requirements. Performs product development activities including drawing board layout and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.

Responsibilities:

• To provide mechanical technical support to all stages of the design lifecycle, from concept definition and system/equipment development, through first article and formal qualification, to manufacture and customer acceptance, under general supervision of the Principal Mechanical Engineer and Technical Manager
• To work closely and build relationships with our internal systems engineering and design teams in generating mechanical specifications and environmental requirements, developing robust product designs, defining, and implementing cost effective design for manufacturing strategies.
• Develop mechanical/structural designs. Produce and take ownership of the design artefacts including, including 3D models, mechanical drawings, BOMs, etc.
• Perform tolerance stack analysis and shock/stress analysis/calculations of mechanical designs, with the capability to justify analysis and calculations.
• To develop mechanical/structural design in line with environmental/shock qualification plans and strategies in support of equipment/system development and formal acceptance.

Desirable

• Assist in the development of engineering plans and statements of work with guidance from the Project Manager and Technical Manager.
• Supporting review of design artifacts produced by design sub-contractor against all relevant mechanical requirements to verify/validate compliance and ensure company mechanical and environmental/shock design principles are being followed.
• Support the Project Manager and Project Technical Manager in preparation of engineering impact assessments and proposals from change requests.
