We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Lead Design Engineer, to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station.

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Civil & Structural Engineering Manager, the Cooling Water Island Lead Civil & Structural Engineer will be responsible for development of the fully integrated technical solutions and governance across the Rolls Royce SMR Cooling Water Island.

As well as technical design itself, you will also have responsibilities of leading a team of approximately 4-6 engineers, but will not have direct line management responsibilities. As the business is expected to grow substantially in the next couple of years, your role will naturally develop and there will be opportunities for your career growth.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

The role covers the technical leadership of the Cooling Water Island civil and structural engineering team and the generic and site specific projects they work on. This includes the management of packages of work under their scope, demonstrating the validity of the technical solutions developed under their direction, the delivery of a robust design and safety justification.

The candidate will also need to assist with the integration of the civil and structural design solution into the overall plant design and lead the resolution of engineering problems within their scope.

This role offers the candidate the exciting first opportunity to work on the design development and Generic Design Assessment of a new nuclear plant design for decades.

  1. Generic Design Assessment Submissions submitted on time to agreed Quality Standards.
  2. ONR queries responded to on time.
  3. Technical Packages within the roles scope delivered to agreed programme.
  4. Successful resolution of technical issues within the roles scope within the agreed programme.
  5. Successful integration of the roles scope into the wider organisation and plant design.
  6. Technical Governance activities completed to agreed programme.
  7. Demonstrable integration of conventional health and safety improvements to the design of the roles scope.
  8. Fosters a supportive working environment and successfully develops those within their team.

The Key Selection Criteria:

1. Technical Leadership of Civil & Structural Engineering Teams

The candidate should be able to provide demonstrable experience of leading civil and structural engineering teams on infrastructure projects, ideally within the nuclear or other highly regulated industries.

2. Role specific knowledge and understanding - analysis, codes and standards, loading conditions.

The candidate should be able to provide demonstrable experience of carrying out and overseeing structural analysis activities and be able to discuss the codes and standards used. The cooling water island features large earth retaining structures, tunnelling, water retaining structures, shoreline structures and offshore structures. Therefore, the candidate should have experience of the analysis, design and justification of some or all of these types of structures.

3. Nuclear and conventional safety knowledge and experience

The role will require interaction with the safety case team and will require the development of civil and structural design substantiation against the requirements of the safety case, for part of the roles' scope. Therefore, it is desirable (but not mandatory) that the candidate has experience of working with nuclear safety cases and the role of engineering in their production.

A systems engineering approach to design development is being used, it would be beneficial if the candidate has experience of this methodology and an awareness or experience of using DOORS. The candidate should be able to articulate examples of integrating conventional health and safety into design solutions e.g. practical application of CDM 2015.

4. Stakeholder management and Technical Governance

The role will require the management of interfaces with other disciplines across the project and contribution to Interdisciplinary Teams. Therefore, the candidate should have experience of stakeholder management on large projects or within complex organisations and have excellent communication skills.

5. Team Leadership and Behaviours

The candidate will be responsible for supporting the Civil and Structural Engineering Manager with the growth and development of a high performing team. This will include support with fostering a positive working environment, where team members feel valued, are empowered to make decisions and challenge direction, with physical and mental wellbeing maintained as a key priority.

Qualifications & Training:

  • Proven Design Review experience in Nuclear or a similarly highly regulated industry
  • Experience in the design of water retaining structures, tunnelling or shoreline/offshore structures.
  • Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer or have sufficient work experience to demonstrate equivalence.
