We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Programmable Elements Safety Engineer to join the Integrated Combat Systems team based in a variety of locations in the UK.

  • The Combat System encompasses the submarine's 'fight capability'. This includes its ability to carry out all submarine Activities whilst submerged and remaining undetected by other parties:
  • Detect Contacts & Targets both above and below the water
  • Support Vehicle Control of the Submarine Platform and Safe Navigation
  • Send and receive both global and local communications
  • Support Self Defence of the Submarine Platform

As a Principal Programmable Elements Safety Engineer, you will be carrying out a range of Programmable Elements Safety Engineering activities and analyses on all areas of the combat system, including navigation, command and control, and communication systems. This work will contribute to the development and maintenance of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Preliminary Systems Safety Assessments (PSSA)/Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), to determine the responsibility for Safety, in order to allocate Safety Integrity Levels to the software functions. Ensuring that the risks of operating the submarine are Broadly Acceptable or Tolerable and as low as reasonably practicable.

Core Duties

Typical duties include (but are not limited to): (suggested 5-10 bullets/statements, indicative of the role at this level)

  • Conducting Programmable Elements Safety Engineering Activities, such as PHA, FTA and PSSA/SSA in support of the Combat System Design Safety Justification and Whole Boat Safety Case.

Determining the causes of:

  • Systematic Programmable Elements Safety failures;
  • Common cause analysis.
  • Defining and monitoring Programmable Elements Safety Requirements and compliance with CASS TOES.
  • Organising and contributing to Hazard Identification workshops and Safety Committee meetings.
  • The integration/acceptance of Commerical off the Shelf (COTS) products.
  • Engaging with third parties, such as equipment or system suppliers, to review and gather supporting Programmable Elements Safety evidence in accordance with Def Stan 00-055.
  • Reporting the progress of Programmable Elements Safety Engineering activities at Project and Programme reviews.
  • Working autonomously, communicating with system subject matter experts, MoD customers, system users (Royal Navy) and Technical Authorities (Product) for CS sub-systems.
  • Working within an established Safety Management System you will bring your expertise and experience to make recommendations for improvements where appropriate, at the same time keeping abreast of changing Programmable Elements Safety standards and industry best-practice.
  • Using your experience and knowledge to mentor and support junior engineers through their career development.
