Axi Recruitment is working with an established renewables business in the Hull area for an experienced Project/Process Engineer who will lead on all design projects and document deliverables, on large scale heat pump projects being deployed throughout the UK.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and review Functional Design Specifications / Control Philosophies to define system operations, ensuring clarity in control logic and interfaces.
  • Create and maintain single-line diagrams (SLDs), control schematics, process flow diagrams and P&IDs using AutoCAD.
  • Perform heat and material balance calculations, equipment sizing, selection and process simulations.
  • Support the procurement process by evaluating vendor technical documentation and ensuring compliance with design requirements.
  • Manage design projects from conception to delivery, ensuring timelines budgets and quality standards are met.
  • Act as the interface between Process Engineering and other disciplines, such as Mechanical, Instrumentation, and Civil Engineering.
  • Support the Operations Team and Sales Team by providing expertise and training. Support external teams, leading clarification meetings.
  • Coordinate and monitor project deliverables, including technical specifications, datasheets, and drawings, ensuring timely submission to clients and vendors.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and reporting for projects.
  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, DESEAR, and other safety reviews to identify and mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Analyse current designs and identify opportunities for process improvements to optimise cost, energy consumption, and operational efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues during design, commissioning, or operational phases of the project. 
  • Prepare detailed technical reports and documentation for stakeholders.
  • Prepare valve, equipment and instrument datasheets and schedules.
  • Provide technical support during factory acceptance testing (FAT) and the integration of vendor systems into broader project designs.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to optimise system performance and reduce downtime.
  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications, risk assessments, and operational manuals.
  • Travel within the UK will be required occasionally for site visits, vendor meetings, and commissioning support.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).

Experience:

  • Knowledge of Functional Design Specification development, with the ability to incorporate control logic into designs.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for process flow diagrams and P&IDs control system drawings.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies such as solar PV, heat pumps, battery storage, and EV charging systems is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, and other office management based software.
  • Relevant experience in an EPC environment or similar, including process design, project coordination, and commissioning support.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
