The Burford Recruitment Company is delighted to be recruiting an Under Gardener for a beautiful private estate near Burford. This full-time, live-in position offers a unique opportunity to work within a close-knit, two-person gardening team, collaborating closely with the Head Gardener to maintain and enhance the estate’s stunning grounds.

This role is perfect for someone with broad horticultural expertise and hands-on experience in an estate setting. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the seasonal needs of the garden, from herbaceous and shrub border care to kitchen garden upkeep and general grounds maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a small team under the guidance of the Head Gardener.
  • Conduct regular care and maintenance of herbaceous and shrub borders, seasonal bedding, container plants, and lawn care.
  • Undertake greenhouse duties, kitchen garden maintenance, and assist with the overall landscape care.
  • Use and maintain various gardening tools and machinery, including hand tools, hedge trimmers, push mowers, and ride-on equipment.
  • Participate in general garden upkeep, ensuring the estate gardens remain visually appealing and healthy.
  • Use of spray applications and chainsaw if qualified, although PA1/PA6 and chainsaw certifications are beneficial but not essential.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven gardening experience, ideally in an estate or private garden environment.
  • Proficiency in using garden machinery and tools.
  • Strong horticultural knowledge across a range of plant care, garden maintenance, and landscape management practices.
  • Physical fitness, with the stamina to perform various gardening tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work on-site every other weekend, as the role includes weekend responsibilities.
