About the Role

Academics are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant (TA) to support students in a SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) specialist school in Haywards Heath. This is a fantastic opportunity for a compassionate and resilient individual to make a real difference in the lives of young people with additional needs.

As an SEN TA, you will work closely with teachers and other support staff to provide tailored assistance to students, helping them engage in their learning and develop essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Assist in implementing EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan) strategies.
  • Support students with emotional regulation, behavior management, and social skills.
  • Create a safe, nurturing, and structured learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals.
  • Adapt learning materials to meet individual student needs.
  • Promote confidence, independence, and positive relationships.
Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, or other additional needs.
  • A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • The ability to de-escalate challenging situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare.

Desirable:

  • Experience in an SEN, PRU, or alternative provision setting.
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 TA, CACHE, Team Teach, MAPA training).
  • Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and restorative practices.
