Legal Counsel

Location: Central Scotland (Hybrid, 3 days onsite, 2 from home)

Reed Legal are seeking a Legal Counsel for one of our long-standing clients, to provide comprehensive legal support to their executive team and regional directors. This role involves both contentious and non-contentious legal work, focusing on contractual matters during preconstruction and throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate will be a qualified solicitor with in-house experience.

Duties:

  • Advise on legal and contractual matters during preconstruction, including input to various project stages, advising the executive team and board members on an array of matters.
  • Review draft contracts and agree subcontract amendments, prepare risk commentaries, and recommend external legal resources when necessary.
  • Assist in negotiating construction contracts and preparing advice notes for project management, ensuring agreed terms before execution and supporting any contract claims, adjudications, or other legal processes.
  • Keep legal forms and notices up to date and propose improvements, providing support and training to business units.
  • Monitor legal fees and provide monthly reports to the board.
  • Enhance governance and risk management processes.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Qualified solicitor – Scots Law essential, co-qualification in English Law beneficial.
  • In-house legal experience within a construction business / construction projects team is beneficial.
  • Non-contentious experience is essential; contentious experience is preferred.
  • Communication and influencing skills, especially working with Senior Leaders.
  • Strong analytical and IT skills, including cost reporting systems.
  • Risk identification and management skills.
  • Ability to lead training sessions and seminars would be ideal.
