The University of Cambridge is offering an exciting opportunity to join its Occupational Health Service as a Senior Occupational Health Adviser. You will become part of a dynamic and friendly team dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing across the University.
We are looking for an experienced Registered General Nurse (adult branch) with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration and a post-registration qualification in Occupational Health at Certificate, Diploma, or Degree level.
Responsibilities
Clinical activities
- Provide occupational health support and advice via telephone, Microsoft Teams, and in person at onsite facilities.
- Prioritize and manage clinical caseloads, addressing complex cases with advanced healthcare knowledge.
- Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with NMC guidelines, data protection, and health and safety regulations.
- Make evidence-based decisions following service user assessments and refer to other health professionals as needed.
- Produce clear post-consultation reports to assist with workplace adjustments.
- Advise on fitness for work, rehabilitation post-absence/injury, and follow up on health issues after accidents.
- Perform administrative tasks, including managing clinical records, completing health screening forms, and coordinating with the support team for appointment bookings.
- Collaborate with University departments such as Safety Office, Staff Counselling Service, and Student Services.
- Maintain clinical practice and professional development, ensuring NMC registration and revalidation.
Project work
- Collaborate with University health and safety teams to deliver a comprehensive workplace health and safety service.
- Conduct independent research on legislation and guidelines to develop departmental procedures for auditing, performance measurement, and evaluation.
- Attend relevant meetings and contribute to the development of University policies, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and employment law.
Line Management
- Lead and manage junior clinical staff, overseeing recruitment, performance reviews, training needs, and leave authorization.
Guidance and Support
- Develop and deliver OH-related health and safety training for all service users.
- Contribute to the creation and updates of digital guidance and content for the OH Service website.
- Assist in developing OH-related databases, such as the Civica OPAS G2 Occupational Health Management system.
Basic Requirements
Education & Qualifications
- Registered General Nurse (NMC, adult branch)
- Post-registration qualification in Occupational Health (Certificate, Diploma, or Degree level)
Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of Health, Safety, Employment, and Occupational Health law
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and IT systems
- Experience in case load management, health surveillance, and programme management
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build relationships with tact and discretion
- Independent, proactive, and able to make decisions in challenging situations
- Flexible and capable of managing work demands under pressure
